This previous Saturday, for the 2nd year in a row, my husband and I attended a food drive for the benefit of Three Square, organized by some good friends of ours, the Stray Cats MC .
I was delighted to see that, in just ONE YEAR, Three Square was able to branch out to take over another building in the same industrial complex. The new building includes a hot kitchen (enormous), dining facilities and a beautiful television kitchen from which they hope to broadcast cooking segments featuring local and international chefs. They've even been able to expand their storage warehouse, which is obviously very exciting.......it means they'd run out of room for all the donations they HAD been getting and needed more space. Always a good sign!
One of the employees of Three Square weighed our contributions we'd all brought, and I'm pleased to say it totalled 562lbs!!! My husband and I also gave a cash donation in addition to the food we brought; as it says on the website, "$1 equals 3 meals", so we paid for 30. I don't know about YOU, but I certainly can't furnish my family with 3 meals on one buck. I don't think I've ever been more in love with a foundation/charity than I am with this one.
(A husband/wife who are members of Stray Cats MC, adding their contributions to the truck)
Two local supermarkets here in town, Albertson's and Fresh & Easy) also allow Three Square to make daily pickups of their 'day old' products and other items they're clearing out (food that is still very much edible and safe, but is past the government-mandated 'expiration' dates), which makes for a plentiful, constant stream of product for Three Square to use. I'm wondering why more markets haven't gotten on-board with this project. If they're already going to take some food as a loss, why not distribute it to those most in need (and take a tax break, to boot!)? When you think of all the casino buffets going on, and all the perfectly good food that is leftover when they're making their course changes (Breakfast to Lunch, Lunch to Dinner) that they just throw away......it makes me sick to my stomach. So much food goes to waste here in Las Vegas.......THAT should be the habit that labels us 'Sin City'.
