I watched this documentary this morning on Netflix. It was about this couple that had collected many, many works of art over their lifetime. The kicker is, they've never really been people of 'means', so to speak. They've filled their tiny, rent-controlled apartment with everything they've ever bought/traded/been given. When you throw aquariums full of fish and turtles and various pieces of furniture in the mix....needless to say, there's not much room in there.
The documentary is called "Herb & Dorothy". They really are quite adorable. They've been married over 40 years (yes, to each other). They go to all the art gallery openings and art museums and art shows and artsy-fartsy assorted events.
The thing that drives me nuts about the documentary is the things they've collected as 'art'. Now, I realize that the word 'art' means different things to different people, but really.......lemme give you an example of one of the 'pieces' they bought:
2 large, framed, BLANK canvases. Yes, there's NOTHING on the canvases and there are frames around them. Am I missing something here?
The artists that are interviewed in the documentary are mainly artists that H & D have purchased works from. I'll be a complete twat here and say that none of it is what I'd consider art. I'm certainly not a snob, but I wouldn't buy 2 blank canvases any sooner than I'd buy an old man's shoe full of cat shit. Wait, I'd better trademark that.
