The Greatest Gift

Another holiday is upon us. Once again, it's one that my family doesn't celebrate in the way traditionally done.  We don't need holidays as an excuse to give things to each other or to feel thankful for what we have or to say kind words to one another.  We do this all the time, just because.  Just because life is short. Just because no one really knows if they're going to wake up tomorrow. Just because here and now is all we have.

I did get a 'present' of sorts this morning when I walked out into the livingroom.  I found a folded piece of paper lying on the floor that must have fallen from its original place.  It was a card that my 14-yr old son had made for his father and I.

On the face, it said: Happy Holidays Mom & Dad
On the left inside flap, he'd written: MOM  Thank you for being the best Mom you could be. I appreciate everything you do for me. Don't ever think I don't.
On the right inside flap: DAD  Thank you for being there for me.  I am glad I can grow up with a father as caring as you.
Underneath it all was written: Happy Holidays! I love both of you very much!!

I was bawling before I even finished reading it.  What is more special and wonderful than something like that?  I went into my son's room and grabbed him, squeezed him TIGHT and kissed his face off.

That card is going to take its rightful place among all its constituents I've collected over the past 20 years of having my wonderful children in my life.....among baby clothes, booties and "firsts",  from teeth to report cards, from fingerpaintings to awards, from ceramic sculptures to paper mache projects.  All mine to keep forever and ever.  These are the greatest gifts of all.
